California introduced a bill which would require all EVs to have bidirectional charging capability starting in model year 2027.

Numbered SB 233, the bill is introduced in the California Senate by Senator Nancy Skinner, who represents the Oakland area, just north of Tesla’s factory in Fremont; it has a lot of organizations supporting it.

It would require all new electric vehicles to be “bidirectional capable” by model year 2027.

What is V2G Technology?

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology refers to the ability for electric vehicles (EVs) to communicate with the power grid, allowing them to both draw power from it, and return excess energy back to it. Essentially, it turns EVs into mobile batteries that can be used to help balance the energy supply and demand of the grid.

V2G Application

How does V2G work?

V2G technology enables bi-directional flow of energy between EVs and the power grid. When an EV is plugged into a smart charging station that is integrated with V2G technology, it can communicate with the grid to determine when it should draw power and when it should feed power back into the grid.

For example, during periods of high demand, when the grid is under stress, V2G-enabled EVs can provide energy back to the grid, relieving some of that stress and preventing blackouts.

V2G Application Benefits

Benefits of V2G technology

In the short term, using V2G reduces EV drivers cost in general and eliminates range anxiety.

  1. Using V2G reduces EV charging costs by providing revenue streams from selling excess energy back to the grid

  2. Using V2G improves battery life by balancing charging and discharging cycles.

  3. Using V2G eliminates range anxiety by providing access to on-demand energy when needed.

In the middle term when EVs are widely used in the market, using V2G saves power cost for households and allocates power in a sensible way.

  1. Provides a more reliable and stable electric grid by balancing the energy supply and demand.

  2. Reduces the load on the electric grid during peak hours, which helps avoid blackouts and brownouts.

  3. Provides access to backup power during power outages and natural disasters.

In the long term, V2G can be revolutionary in that it can change the grid power allocation way and be a propeller for the green path.

  1. Supports the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid by using EV batteries to store and release excess energy.

  2. Reduces greenhouse gas emissions by optimizing the use of electricity generated by renewable sources.

  3. Facilitates the transition to a smart grid by enabling automated communication between EVs and utility companies.

How to find the most suitable V2G product for home

For household or home use, there are some aspects about V2G products need to know and do reserch.

  1. Consider the type of electric vehicle you are using - some chargers are only compatible with specific vehicles.

  2. Check the charging speed and convenience - different chargers may have different charging rates, and some may be more user-friendly than others (e.g. wireless charging vs. plug-in).

  3. Look at the pricing - different V2G chargers can vary greatly in terms of cost, so it's important to do your research and find one that fits your budget.

  4. Read reviews - check out what other users are saying about the product to ensure it meets your needs and expectations.

  5. Consider the features - some V2G chargers may come with additional features, such as energy management systems or compatibility with smart home technology.

  6. Check compatibility with your home's electrical system - make sure the charger you choose is compatible with your home's electrical system and meets safety standards.

UUGreenPower V2G Bidirectional DC Charging Pile products consider all the aspects above and are compatible with most electrical systems and meets safety standards. There are two output power levels for the products, including the 7kW V2G Bidirectional DC Charging Pile and the 11kW V2G Bidirectional DC Charging Pile. With IP65 protection design, UUGreenPower V2G products support bi-directional energy transmission between grid and EV. They support wide voltage range of constant power from 300V to 750V. The charging/discharging efficiency is more than 95% while the noise level is less than 55dB.
