Bidirectional charging is the ability of car battery to receive energy from the grid and to share the electricity it produces. There are two main categories:

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G): Energy is exported from EV chargers to support the grid.

Vehicle to Home (V2H): Energy is used to power a home or business.

How does EV charging work?

When you charge an electric car, the alternating current (AC) it receives from the grid needs to be converted to direct current (DC) in order for it to be the correct format to power the car's battery. This can be done via a converter in the car or an external charger.

If you want to use the energy stored in an EV's battery to power your home or feed it back into the grid, you must convert the DC power from the car back to AC. This is done by a bidirectional charger. Two-way charging is most effective when the power is supplemented by solar energy, as this can generate more energy when the sun is strong.

The advantage of bidirectional charging

EV batteries can store up to 10 times more power than the standard 7 kWh lithium batteries commonly found in solar PV systems installed in homes.

Electric vehicle owners can earn points or reduce energy costs through V2G. Relieve grid stress during periods of high demand, such as heat waves.Charge your vehicle at the lowest rates during off-peak hours, while feeding power back to the grid when energy rates are highest and reducing your overall energy costs.

Electric vehicle batteries can help reduce your reliance on the grid, especially when combined with rooftop solar panels. New business models and partnerships increase the use of renewable energy and sell excess power back to the grid.
